How it works · methodology
The math, in the open.
units = Σ ( contribution ÷ price_month ) value = units × price_latest avg cost = total invested ÷ units annualized = money-weighted IRR of the monthly cash flows
- contribution
- Your fixed monthly amount
- price_month
- That month's closing price
- units
- Total Bitcoin accumulated
- IRR
- The rate that sets the net present value of all cash flows to zero
Assumptions & limits
- Buys occur once per month at the monthly closing price; intra-month timing is ignored.
- Trading fees, spreads, withdrawal costs, and taxes are not modeled.
- The lump-sum comparison invests your total contributed amount at the first month’s price.
- Past performance does not predict future results. This is an estimate, not investment advice.

Frequently asked
Questions about DCA
What is dollar-cost averaging (DCA)?
Dollar-cost averaging means investing a fixed amount on a fixed schedule — say $100 every month — regardless of price. You buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, which removes the need to time the market.
Does DCA beat investing a lump sum?
Historically, investing a lump sum up front beats DCA more often than not, because markets trend up over time and lump sum keeps money invested longer. DCA wins when the market falls after you start, and it reduces regret and timing risk. This calculator shows both outcomes side by side for the period you choose.
What data does this calculator use?
Real monthly closing prices for Bitcoin from Yahoo Finance. Each month buys at that month’s close. Results are estimates and exclude trading fees, spreads, and taxes.
Is past performance a guarantee of future results?
No. Bitcoin is highly volatile and past returns do not predict future returns. This tool is for education, not investment advice.
